How Reliance, Tata, Adani & others are powering India's defence manufacturing push
Amid geopolitical tensions and supply chain uncertainties, India is increasingly looking to localise defence manufacturing. The Centre's Make in India push has encouraged domestic defence companies to partner with global majors and bring advanced technology and manufacturing capabilities to India.
India's defence expenditure rose 8.9% to $92.1 billion in 2025, according to SIPRI, making it the world's fifth-largest military spender. Domestic defence production also hit a record Rs 1.78 lakh crore in 2025-26, with the private sector accounting for 24%.
Recently, Tata Advanced Systems signed an MoU with the Javelin Joint Venture to explore co-production of Javelin anti-tank missiles in India. The pact is the latest example of Indian defence companies partnering with global majors to build local manufacturing capabilities.
